The Cosmetology Diploma Program oﬀers students the opportunity to acquire and practice the knowledge, skills, and aptitude necessary to gain an entry-level job in the cosmetology ﬁeld. Students receive instruction in cosmetology theory and practical experience in hair, skin, and nail care. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the Florida Licensure. Notice to students and prospective students: The Cosmetology program at the Florida Technical College campus located in Deland, FL has been placed on student achievement show-cause by their accreditor, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (“ACICS”), due to material noncompliance with its placement rate standard of 60%.

Cosmetology School : Course descriptionThe courses curriculum of FTC’s Cosmetology School is composed of various classes, which implement basic and contemporary skills in areas such as Face -Makeup, Hair coloring techniques, Salon Design and management, Haircutting 1,2,3 and Hair Styling Techniques.
Core FUNdamentals-CosmetologyThis course features the historical background of cosmetology and its evolution process. Discussions include the dress code, makeup, behavior and attitudes of the future professional. Different specialization and possible job opportunities for future graduates are included in this module. Florida Law and ethical case studies will be discussed and explain so the students understands how the law applies to the Cosmetology Industry. Students study of bacteriology and infection control procedures necessary for the safe practice of Cosmetology. Topics include microbiology, practical infection control, sterilization and monitoring, chemical disinfectants, aseptic technique, infectious diseases, OSHA standards, and first aid. Students will receive four (4) hours of HIV/AIDS awareness training. Upon completion, students would be able to understand infectious diseases, disease transmission, infection control procedures, biohazard management, OSHA standards. In addition, the student will learn the basics of hair growth and will practice the different techniques to remove face and body hair, temporarily. After a review of the procedures to properly perform temporary hair removal using soft or hard wax and tweezing students will perform a client consultation with the client in order to review contraindications with them. Student will determine if the client is a candidate for temporary hair removal, and will review pre and post care not only to make the client comfortable, but to also perform the service using proper safety and disinfection rules regarding permanent body and face hair removal. The students will review different methods of permanent hair removal electrolysis, laser, photo-epilation, and pulse light, this course does not provide hands on training of permanent hair removal procedures. The theoretical concepts related to presence of chemicals and electricity in the hair, beauty products and equipment. The focus is in using the correct adequate materials and products. Among the topics to be covered are a description of safe working area, the proper client’s preparation for the procedure, and the performance of the techniques of the use of products and equipment. Students will study the hair composition, including its structure, growth, distribution, color, and development. Hair loss and other scalp conditions and treatments are topics discussed. The student will obtain practical experience on scalp treatment application, according to individual conditions. Students will learn different basic hair styling techniques according to hairstyle requirements, the basics of wet styling, finger waves, pin curls, roller curls, comb-out techniques, hair wrapping, blow-dry styling techniques, and learn to maintain safety in thermal hairstyling.
Design Elements and Principles-CosmetologyStudents will continue to practice sterilization and disinfection throughout this course along with practical skills learned in the previous described course.This course is aimed to the haircut development according to individual’s characteristics. Among other techniques,the student will practice elevation and its variable, sectioning, angles, etc., using the proper instruments and equipment. The course features the skin composition, structure and growth and students will study skin disorders and diseases along with learning the products recommended for the different skin types. In addition, the course is devoted to the learning of skin conditions, and facial manipulations, and its psychological effects. Students will understand why anatomy and physiology are important to the Cosmetologist, and will review the eleven body systems. This course will also include face makeup application techniques according to the occasion, individual face characteristics. The adequate products, instruments, and equipment for artificial eyelashes, and eyebrows arching are reviewed, and practiced. The student will learn hair coloring theory, and mixture procedures to attain changes, and special effects in the hair.
Creative Artistry-CosmetologySterilization and disinfection will continue to be practiced and reviewed throughout the course and students will apply practical skills learned in the previous two classes described earlier. This course will continue the practice of Haircutting, as well as effectively using clippers, and trimmers, and the proper sterilization, and disinfection of the equipment. Razor, texturizing, and the understanding of other cutting techniques along with applying safety skills while cutting will be reviewed, and practiced. This course will also display the step-to-step chemical process when handling perms, hair relaxation, “reverses”, and hair straightening, for different types of hair with the purpose of achieving a transformation of the client. The course will help students to learn to design, and apply wigs and hairpieces correctly to the client. Students will be trained and will practice cleaning, cutting, coloring and styling human and synthetic wigs and/or hairpieces. Topics include tools, equipment, and types of ornamentation, safety and sanitation procedures. Students will learn the importance of studying braiding and braid extensions. Demonstrations of braiding will be shown and students will be able to perform, and practice multiple braiding techniques.
Career Development-CosmetologyDuring this course students will continue to practice sterilization. Students will put into practice their practical skills learned in the three previous classes. The course covers the development of strategies for job search and the most known aspect of managing and marketing a beauty salon. Also, this course is intended to develop the personality traits of the students, so that they can deal adequately with future responsibilities. Furthermore, the job market, opportunities in the field, job search, and retention strategies, moral values, and ethics, legal regulations, and the certification test are subjects discussed. This course acquaints the student with the arm and legs muscular-skeletal system, so that he/she can perform the correct massages and attain efficient manicures and pedicures. Emphasized are adequate instruments, safety measures, and timing.
