A Medical Billing and Coding Diploma: the Path to Work-Life Balance?

Let’s face it: there’s stress no matter what job you have. Maybe somewhere there is a lucky person working as a beach tester, but even that guy probably has deadlines. On-the-job stress is a fact of life. Fortunately most of us, with a little experience, get better at dealing with it.

medical-billing-coding-ftcFor many, a major source of stress is not the job itself, but work-life balance. It seems impossible to be a stellar employee while maintaining a rich, rewarding home life. And this is especially true if you have children, because the expectations are simply ridiculous. The working mom who kills it at the office and then arrives home cheerful, energetic and ready to cook her family a gourmet meal? She most likely doesn’t exist.

So let’s think realistically. Is it possible to achieve work-life balance? The answer is yes, but like anything else worth doing, you’re going to have to work for it.

What’s Your Job Like?

The first thing you need to consider is your present job. One particular source of stress can be scheduling. Do you work a different schedule every week? Are the hours crazy? Do you have to work at a moment’s notice?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then you need to find a more stable career — such as medical billing and coding. They’re the people who create and manage important medical documents.

In most cases, working in medical billing is a 9-to-5 job. But there are options — you could look for work in hospitals, doctors’ offices or insurance companies, depending upon the kind of work schedule you are looking for.

How Do You Get a Better Job?

Here’s the hard, or harder part. If you want a career in medical billing and coding, you will need training first. At Florida Technical College we have a comprehensive course with training in procedural coding, diagnostic coding, anatomy, physiology, medical law, medical ethics and basic office skills.

You may be concerned that getting your Medical Billing and Coding Diploma will cause even more stress. How can you add a training program on top of family responsibilities and your present job?

It’s not going to be easy. But with 6 locations to choose from with day and evening courses, scheduling won’t be a concern. There’s also an online option that allows you to work when you want, where you want and at your own pace.

At Florida Technical College, the support doesn’t stop when you graduate. Our Career Services staff can help you with the job hunt and with preparing for interviews.

Making It All Work

A secure job with a regular schedule will remove a lot of stress. But it won’t make your life perfect — remember, perfection is impossible. Instead, you’re going to think about it as a balancing act, an ongoing responsibility that requires frequent tinkering.

Basically the people with the best work-life balance have systems in place to help them get the tedious stuff done more quickly. They’ve worked out a budget, so there are no surprises at the end of the month. They’ve worked out family meals in advance to save time shopping. And they’ve coordinated the family schedules so that everybody knows where they need to be and when.

If there are hitches once in a while — because there always are hitches — they’re prepared to deal with them because they already have a system.

So work-life balance is indeed achievable. It just takes some effort! If this sounds good to you, check out our Medical Billing and Coding program— as well as our other training programs.
