Choosing Cosmetology Schools in Florida: What to look for

Posted on August 14th, 2015 by Florida Technical College

Choosing Cosmetology Schools in Florida: What to look for Good morning, class! We’re going to start the day with a one-question pop quiz! Don’t you just LOVE pop quizzes? What is the one obstacle that stands in the way of anyone who wants to become a cosmetologist in Florida? a) An education b) Money c) Time d) None of the above The correct answer is d), “None of the above.”   The one thing that stands in the way of anyone who wants to become a cosmetologist in Florida is passing the licensing exam. Understanding this fact will help in the selection of the right cosmetology school. Will the School Prepare Me to Pass the Licensing Exam? Don’t ever think of education as an obstacle. It is preparation. In this case, it is preparation not only for a specialized career in cosmetology, but to pass the licensing exam. Therefore, your initial consideration when choosing a cosmetology school in Florida is being certain that the school you choose will prepare you to pass the exam. For Florida Technical College, the answer is “Yes.” Course COS2006 is entitled Occupational Seminar/Board Exam Review. The exam is easy when you are prepared. Is Financial Aid Available? Here is an amazing statistic. “100% of program graduates used loans to help finance their costs” for the FTC Cosmetology program. Money is available in the form of grants, scholarships and loans – and FTC will help you get it. Give FTC another “Yes.” Financial aid is available. We’ll help you find it. How Will I Find the Time? Finding a school that offers both day and evening classes, as well as flexible scheduling, is important for anyone who may have significant responsibilities outside of school. Does FTC qualify? Yes, it does. Is There Hands-On Training? Training in practical, hands-on skills is not really training if it does not include actual hands-on training. Nearly 25% of the Cosmetology program at FTC is hands-on lab or on-site experience. That’s the equivalent of seven 40-hour work weeks. Again, that’s a “Yes” for FTC. Real training on real people. Will I Get Personalized Attention? One of the biggest fears of students in any area of study is the fear of failure. It’s important to find a school that offers small classes that allow for the kind of personalized attention that transforms fear into confidence. That transformation is one of the most critical components of preparation. Rack up another “Yes” for FTC. Do the Instructors Have Expertise and Experience? The best teachers are the ones who have “been there/done that” experience. Only they are equipped to go beyond theory and technique and add the lessons that can only be taught from real-world experiences. FTC instructors are “industry experts with real-world experience.” Will I Be Able to Gain Practical Business Skills? This is especially important for those who hope to own and operate their own business. That’s why the best cosmetology schools in Florida offer courses in ethics, legal compliance and salon design and management, just like FTC does. There is nothing like being a cosmetologist and owning my own business. What Are My Chances for Finding a Job After Graduation? No one can answer that question, and ultimately, the level of success you achieve in school or after graduation is largely up to you. Nonetheless, the best cosmetology schools offer job placement services and their students have a high statistical rate of success. In the 2013-2014 school year, the job placement rate for students at our Deland campus was 100%. FTC qualifies again. May I Visit the Campus? Yes! Most definitely, “Yes!” In fact, we urge you to visit our Deland and Kissimmee campuses to see our modern facilities and meet our staff. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Not to mention that you will be impressed. Click here to contact us. We would love to show you more about how we can prepare you for a successful career in Cosmetology. You will be amazed at the opportunities that await you at Florida Technical College.   RELATED ARTICLES : Cosmetology Schools in Florida: Hair Care and More Learn about Face Shapes at Florida Technical College

Learn about Face Shapes at Florida Technical College

Posted on August 11th, 2015 by Florida Technical College

Attention Cosmetology Students: They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But what if a customer walks into a salon, presents the stylist with a picture of a celebrity or model and asks for a cut and style just like the picture? Does she really know what she is asking? And is it the right thing to do? Beauty happens when the style matches the face shape. Anyone thinking about a career in cosmetology, especially as a hairstylist, should expect that this is actually going to happen a lot more than just once or twice. What Looks Good Doesn’t Always Look Good Just because a particular hairstyle looks good on Angelina Jolie, does not mean that the same style on any other woman is going to make her look like Angelina Jolie. In fact, it doesn’t even mean that the style will look good on that woman at all. You’re going to love how this style fits your face. While, on the one hand, the style that the customer wants may suit her just fine, it is also just as possible that it may not. An accomplished hairstylist will know immediately that although she can provide what the customer has requested, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the desired style will produce the desired effect. What Looks Good on One Face Doesn’t Always Look Good on Another Face One of the most critical fundamentals of hairstyle is understanding face shapes, because stylists need to understand which hairstyles are flattering for each face shape – and which are not. I like how my new style makes me look. Just how important is understanding face shapes relative to hairstyling? At Florida Technical College, we think it is extremely important. Check these phrases taken directly from styling course descriptions in our catalog: “haircut development according to individual’s characteristics” – COS1030 Haircutting I “according to individual conditions” – COS1100 Hair Care Principles “according to individual’s facial characteristics” – COS1130 Haircutting II   The emphasis at Florida Technical College is on understanding how to beautify based on each individual’s characteristics, especially the shapes of their faces. It’s Not What You Know or What You Can Do. It’s What You Do with What You Know. Sure, you can give her the Angelina Jolie cut, but ultimately she is going to be “the beholder.” Ultimately, what she wants to behold in the mirror is not Angelina Jolie. She wants to see a more beautiful version of herself. Can you make me look like Angelina Jolie? Stylists who understand what works and what does not work with various face shapes also understand how to deliver what is most flattering to their customers. It may not be possible, due to face shape, to deliver what the customer asks for, but knowing what to do and how to do it will be the learned skills that deliver what your customer really wants – to look beautiful. You can learn more about our cosmetology courses at www.ftccollege.edu. While you are visiting our website, you will be able to contact us. Someone is always available to answer your questions or even arrange for a visit to our Deland and Kissimmee campuses where you can meet faculty and administration and tour our modern facilities. From face shapes to hairstyles, FTC is ready to prepare you for a career in cosmetology. Lou Gutheil writes about a wide variety of subjects, including investments, immigration, technology, NGOs, and higher education marketing.   RELATED ARTICLES : 5 Hot Makeup Trends for Spring 2016 Choosing Cosmetology Schools in Florida: What to look for
