FTC Kissimmee Beauty Salon Gives Cosmetology Students Real-Life Experiences

Real-Life experiences for FTC Cosmetology Students

Even before obtaining her diploma in Barbering at Florida Technical College, Stephanie Castellon, a 31-year old from Costa Rica, is already making people feel beautiful and better about themselves. Her school has a beauty salon where she can practice what she has learned in the classroom on real clients under the supervision of a licensed professional.

“A good haircut can make people feel better about themselves,” Castellon said.  “To be able to pursue my goal to be a stylist while also helping people is a fantastic opportunity that FTC has afforded me. I love seeing the look on people’s faces when we’re done styling them. They feel empowered, stronger, and better about themselves.”

Florida Technical College barbering and cosmetology students provide services at a low cost at the professional beauty salon. The hands-on learning experience is an important building block in their training.

“We get real-life experience with real customers,” Castellon said. “We are given a chance to put into practice what we’re learning while building a clientele and having the whole salon experience.”

In addition to serving the community at large, the school has teamed up with nonprofit organizations to offer services at no cost. It also offers specially discounted prices to senior citizens, veterans, and first responders.

“Students provide families, low-income individuals, the elderly, and anyone who comes through our doors with excellent services for their hair care needs at a very affordable price,” said Muriel Gutierrez, Executive Director of Florida Technical College campus. “Additionally, we are working with several nonprofits, like Job Corps of South Florida, giving free services to their clients. It’s a great experience for our students, but also immensely gratifying for them as members of this community.”

Students who enroll in the Barbering diploma program learn various techniques in hairstyling, coloring, and face shaving. Those in the Cosmetology program learn makeup, hair cutting, coloring, management, and salon design. Having the ability to practice what they are learning in a real salon while studying is an asset for students and keeps them excited throughout their journey.

What Do They Teach You in a Barbering Course?

There are many hairstyling techniques that you will learn during a barbering course. From fades and tapering to shaving technique and facial hair designs. Once you complete the barbering program, you will be ready to be a professional in a barbershop. During a barbering course you learn:

Hair Structure

During a barbering course you will learn about the hair, how it grows, why hair is a specific color, how hair develops, hair loss and the different elements of the hair structure. This will help you better understand the best way to style a client’s hair.

Barbering Fundamentals

During barbering courses, you will learn basic men’s haircutting techniques. This includes using tools and techniques to safely design, cut and shape hair. Whether it is parting, thinning, layering, outlining, elevation, finger and shears, shears over comb or clippers, you will have all the techniques you need to help with the newest looks. You will learn about different neckline options, sideburns, and different lengths.

Face Shaving

Part of the barbering course will focus on face shaving, and beard and mustache styling. You will learn how to apply facial treatments based on the client’s facial skin condition. During this course, you learn about different techniques of shaving the face and creating different facial hair designs.

Using Hair Styling Equipment

Learning how to use different hair styling equipment like blow dryers and thermal irons will help you style your client’s hair. During these barbering courses, you will learn the proper manipulation and maintenance of the hair styling equipment that you will use to cut and style your client’s hair.

Infection Control

To keep everyone safe, it is important for you to learn infection control. You will learn about microbiology, how to sterilize tools, chemical disinfectants, infectious diseases, OSHA standards and first aid. Whether it is bacteria that is on a countertop or the need for cleaning tools in between clients, using proper infection control procedures will help keep you and your clients safe.

Barbering as a Business

This coursework focuses on the business of barbering, whether you work at a barbershop or own one. You will acquire the skills to manage a barbershop, from marketing and financial management to selling hair care products.

Preparation for the Barber License Exam

Vocational schools prepare you for the exam you will need to take to get a barbering license. In the state of Florida, you are required to get a barbering license to cut client’s hair. Once you graduate from an approved and accredited barbering program, you will be eligible to sit for the Florida barber license exam.
