HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF METRO ORLANDO IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FLORIDA TECHNICAL COLLEGE TO AWARD FULL-RIDE SCHOLARSHIP AS PART OF “REACH HIGHER” INITIATIVE, RECOGNIZING LATINO ENTREPRENEURS AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY

The “Reach Higher” Business Scholarship, created to advance U.S. Latino entrepreneurship, offers one full-ride scholarship applicable toward tuition and fees for the Florida Technical College bachelor’s degree program in Business Entrepreneurship, Management, and Marketing.

In partnership with Florida Technical College (FTC), the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO) is proud to announce the launch of the “Reach Higher” Business Scholarship program. To contribute to the growth of Latino entrepreneurship, the annual Hispanic Heritage Month scholarship initiative will award one full FTC scholarship applicable toward tuition and fees for the bachelor’s degree program in Business Entrepreneurship, Management, and Marketing. Applications are now officially open and will close on August 31, 2021.

“We are proud to partner with FTC in this initiative to help us in our mission to drive economic growth by strengthening Hispanic business and entrepreneurs in Central Florida,” said Gabriela “Gaby” Ortigoni, president & CEO, HCCMO. “We thank FTC for investing back in the development of our professional and business community.”

“Now more than ever, FTC continues its commitment to work alongside our business community to help Latinx leaders continue making an impact in Central Florida,” added Dr. James Michael Burkett, President of Florida Technical College. “A*recent report states that there is a lack of preparedness for Latino entrepreneurs compared to other entrepreneurs; our goal with this initiative is to close that gap.”

Flexible and convenient, the Business Entrepreneurship, Management, and Marketing Program is offered 100% online, ideal for working professionals, enabling them to continue working while pursuing their academic goals. The time to complete the bachelor’s program is only 36 months.

The recipient of this scholarship will be announced during a special ceremony during Hispanic Heritage Month on September 30, 2021, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the FTC Orlando Campus located at 12900 Challenger Parkway, Orlando, FL 32826. Attendees will include HCCMO board members, community leaders, business owners, elected officials, and local influencers.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet all the following criteria and requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age;
  • Highly motivated individuals who can demonstrate:
    • Strong commitment to career development
    • Strong business idea and implementation plan
    • Strong, professional background or academic achievements
  • Three (3) professional references
  • Must submit a video detailing their contributions to the community and how a degree would help further their career

*According to the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship 2017 State of Latino Entrepreneurship (SOLE) report, there is a lack of preparedness for Latino entrepreneurs compared to other entrepreneurs. A substantial number of existing and potential Latino entrepreneurs are not properly equipped to open and grow businesses. They do not have proper business plans, procedures in place, and financial statements that are required to access capital, work with agencies such as the Small Business Administration, and grow a business. Latino entrepreneurs need to build and expand their networks to find more support and figure out how to better exploit the fact that they are, according to our SOLE report, more international than other businesses.
